A guilty verdict has been delivered in the shooting case against Tory Lanez. Lanez, known as Daystar Peterson, was convicted earlier today and could face a sentence of over 20 years and deportation to Canada. He was found guilty on the charges of discharging and carrying a loaded firearm and assault with a firearm.
In 2020 Peterson was arrested after shots were fired at Megan Thee Stallion, known as Megan Pete, after an argument. Megan was transported to the hospital where she had to have surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.
Megan Thee Stallion has endured many naysayers since the incident, accusing her of lying about the ordeal, but she never recanted her story.
Tory Lanez has also continuously maintained his innocence throughout the arrest and trial, posting his last tweet earlier this month that "NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST ME SHALL PROSPER … AND EVERY TONGUE THAT RISES AGAINST ME IN JUDGEMENT SHALL BE CONDEMNED u sit and watch now …. And don’t ever question the GOD I serve again ."
Many celebrities also stood by Lanez including Drake who took shots at Megan in a song with 21 Savage titled 'Circo Loco.' In the song he is heard rapping:
"This b#%@ch lie ’bout getting shots, but she still a stallion
She don’t even get the joke
But she still smiling."
“Shorty say she graduated, she ain’t learn enough
Play your album, track one, ‘kay, I heard enough.”
Megan clapped back at the "Fall Back" artist in a tweet condemning the lyrics.
50 Cent also took shots at her during the trial insinuating that she was lying about the shooting:
Supporters of Megan were happy to hear the verdict and called out those that didn't believe the shooting happened.
Others also called out the mistreatment she had to endure as black women speaking her truth.
The family of Lanez, particularly his father Sonstar Peterson, had an emotionally charged reaction to the conviction. The father blasted the verdict as a "miscarriage of justice" and called out Jay-Z and his entertainment and management company Roc Nation for allegedly exerting their influence on the decision.
Social media took offense to the father attempting to his son's conviction to the injustices of the murder of black people including Breonna Taylor and Emmett Till and Tamir Rice.
Tory supporters still maintained his innocence and cited many theories for the conviction including a rigged system, biased jury and lack of DNA evidence.
During the 9 day trial it was revealed that DNA on the gun was inconclusive and it could not be determined whether Tory held the gun or snot. However, witnesses were called to the case including Megan's ex-friend Kelsey Nicole who reported to police (and wrote in text messages after the incident) that Tory did in fact shoot Megan. An eyewitness also called by the defense confirmed that Peterson had a gun and made four or five shots that night.
Tory was detained after the decision and held without bail to await sentencing scheduled for January 2023.
