CELINE DION DIAGNOSED WITH STIFF PERSON SYNDROME; POSTPONES TOUR

December 8, 2022

Celine has postponed her tour due to her recent diagnosis of a rare neurological disease.

A heartbreaking video was posted of Celine making the announcement. In the video, Celine is seated and appears to be fighting back tears as she apologizes to fans for "taking so long to reach out to you." She then went on to confirm that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (or Stiff-man's Syndrome) a disorder that affects "1 in a million people."

She also explained in the caption that she had been "been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through…".

Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder that affects one's physical mobility and nervous system. The symptoms of SPS include difficulty walking, heightened sensitivity to environmental stimuli (e.g. sound, touch, smell), muscle spasms and rigidity. Dion confirmed that the disorder has made it difficult for her to walk and has also affected her vocal chords, both of which are vital to perform. Very little is still known about the disease or what causes it.

Dion had planned to restart her European tour in the spring of 2023 but dates were pushed into 2024 to allow her time to attend to her heath. She reassured fans that she has "a great team of doctors" working with her and that her children are supporting her during this time.
