Rapper Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., passed away yesterday at the age of 59.
It was reported by TMZ that paramedics were called to his Los Angeles home where he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was cardiac arrest and no drugs were found in his system.
The rapper reached fame in the 90s, most known for his hit single 'Gangsta's Paradise' for which he won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. The single was also featured on the soundtrack for the 1995 film 'Dangerous Minds' starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
Rappers Mc Hammer and Snoop Dogg posted tributes to the rap icon on social media.
Pfeiffer wrote that she was "Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist @coolio. A life cut entirely too short. As some of you may know I was lucky enough to work with him on Dangerous Minds in 1995. He won a Grammy for his brilliant song on the soundtrack - which I think was the reason our film saw so much success. I remember him being nothing but gracious. 30 years later I still get chills when I hear the song. Sending love and light to his family. Rest in Power, Artis Leon Ivey Jr. ❤️"
