Mexico continues to crack down on smoking by enacting a ban on all public smoking on Sunday, January 15, 2023, making it one of the strictest anti-smoking laws in the world. The ban applies to all public spaces including hotels, beaches, and parks.
The country enacted The General Law on Tobacco Control in 2008 to facilitate the implementation of regulations to limit advertising and marketing of tobacco products, the prohibition of tobacco-like products (e.g. e-cigarettes), increase tariffs, and impose strict avenues through which products can be sold.
Mexico's smoking rate has been steadily declining since 2000 with a rate of 13% in 2022, a reduction of 11% over 20 years.
Other countries like New Zealand have also implemented new measures in the hopes of lowering tobacco use.
