WHO DECLARES GLOBAL EMERGENCY AS MONKEYPOX SPREADS

July 24, 2022

Months after the onset of the virus spreading throughout the world the World Health Organization has now declared the Monkeypox outbreak a global emergency. Starting in only 20 countries the virus is now present in over 70 countries.

Cases have been found in not only endemic countries but also non-endemic countries closely linked to their respective travel histories. More common in regions in Africa, the virus is now present in countries located in Europe and the Americas.

Monkeypox is a disease having symptoms similar to smallpox, but less severe. The principal transmission is from animals to humans followed by human to human. Contact through bodily fluids, lesions, respiratory droplets and contaminated objects can effect transfer of the virus. Symptoms can last 2-4 weeks but very rarely become severe or fatal (WHO website).
