China's spy equipment has been destroyed after spending several days floating in the air in the United States.
The balloon was originally sighted in Montana but was not shot down due to the dangers of falling debris. It eventually made its way towards the Carolinas and finally to the Atlantic, over U.S. territorial waters, where President Biden gave the order to bring it down.
China claimed that they were not spying and it was simply a research aircraft. The U.S. maintained its position that it was surveillance equipment and had it destroyed. Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, also postponed his trip to China after the sightings.
Tensions among the two countries have been increasingly heightened with the U.S. General Mike Minihan having a 'gut' feeling of a war with China in 2025 after a leaked memo surfaced in the media. He wrote: “I hope I am wrong. My gut tells me we will fight in 2025".
China also has strong ties with Russia, providing military aid in the country's war against Ukraine. War parts from Chinese state-owned defense companies were imported into Russian according to customs records.
