Occurring in the early morning while people were sleeping, thousands fled for safety as search and rescue teams were sent in to aid survivors. This is the strongest quake to occur in 100 years and covered over 100 kilometres between Turkey and Syria.
Aftershocks soon followed the first earthquake including a second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5.
The natural disaster occurred along a fault line also responsible for a 7.4 earthquake in 1822 that killed over 7000 people. A fault line consists of plates that, when rubbed together, cause enough friction to move the surface.
