Shortly after announcing his return as Superman in October, actor Henry Cavill confirmed that he will no longer be returning to don the cape of the man of steel. Cavill shared the "sad news" on Instagram that after a meeting with writer James Gunn and CEO Peter Safran it was decided he would not be playing the role. He confessed that "[a]fter being by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life".
He thanked his fans for their continued support while he embodied the role and noted that "Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there!"
Cavill first played the super hero in the 2013 film Man of Steel. He then went on to star in more DC films including Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. He was also recently featured in the post-credits scene of the Black Adam movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, hinting that he would made an appearance in the next instalment.
James Gunn will be writing the script and he confirmed in a tweet that the DC film will focus on the early years of the life of Superman, explaining why Cavill would not be able to play the character.
Gunn also teased the possibility that, while a director has not yet been chosen, Ben Affleck might wear that hat after a meeting in which the Batman actor expressed interest.
DC fans have come to love Cavill as Superman and whoever comes next will have big shoes to fill. We can't wait to see who is picked to play the young Superman in the upcoming film!
