RECAP OF THE 2022 MTV AWARDS: WINNERS, PERFORMANCES AND BIGGEST MOMENTS OF THE NIGHT

The MTV Video Music Awards aired last night with the biggest stars in attendance from Black Pink to Doja Cat. The show was hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow with performances by Bad Bunny, J. Balvin and Blackpink. The awards event was held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.


Johnny Depp also made an appearance as a real life Moon Man floating above the audience and delivering one liners throughout the night.


Harry Styles and Doja Cat were tied with 8 nominations followed by Lil Nas X, Drake and Kendrick Lamar with 7 for categories including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Below are some of the biggest winners of the night.


Harry Styles won Best Album for 'Harry's House' and both Best Cinematography and Best Pop for 'As It Was.' He accepted his awards from Madison Square Garden where he was scheduled to perform that night for his Love On Tour show. Dove Cameron won Best New Artist while Billie Eilish won Song of the Year for 'Happier Than Ever.' BTS won Best Group, Doja Cat won 'Best Choreography' for 'Woman' and Best Editing went to Rosalia for 'Saoko.'


Jack Harlow racked up four Moon Man awards. He also performed his hit 'First Class' (for which he won Song of the Summer) and brought out surprise guest Fergie for the introduction!

Lil Nas X won big for 'Industry Baby' featuring Jack Harlow. He walked away the winner of three awards, Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.

Anitta became the first Brazilian artist to win an MTV award (Best Latin) and had a sizzling performance of her hit 'Envolver.'

Bad Bunny also performed, won Artist of the Year and kissed his backup dancer, making it an eventful night!

Lizzo won the Video For Good award for 'About Damn Time.' While she admitted not knowing what the 'Video for Good' award meant she did thank her fans for voting for her, 'Your vote means everything to me', and encouraged them to make a change through politics by voting 'to change some of these laws that are oppressing us'. She also addressed her haters, "To the bitches that got something to say about me in the press...bitch I'm winning Ho!'



Video of the Year and Best Direction went to Taylor Swift for 'All Too Well', thanking the Swifties and announcing the release of her 10th studio album 'Midnights' on October 21, 2022.


Group of the Year and Best Metaverse Performance went to K-pop group Blackpink. They performed their hit single 'Pink Venom', making it their first US award show performance. Member Lisa also won Best K-Pop with 'LALISA', the first female solo K-Pop artist to win.


Nicki Minaj was this year's recipient of the MTV Video Music Awards’ Video Vanguard Award, won Best Hip-Hop for 'Do We Have A Problem?' featuring Lil-Baby and performed her greatest hits including 'Super Bass.' She is in good company with past winners including The Beatles and David Bowie (1984), Michael Jackson (1988), The Rolling Stones (1994), U2 (2001) Britney Spears (2011), Beyonce (2014) and Rihanna (2016).

When accepting the Vanguard award Nicki thanked artists that created life changing opportunities for her including Rihanna, Beyonce, Madonna and Kanye West.




During her acceptance speech For Best Hip Hop she shouted out the Barbz for their undying support and thanked artists that paved the way and worked with her musically during her career including 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Lil Baby, Taylor Swift, and Salt-N-Pepa.

This has been a great year for Nicki as she returns to music after her hiatus from having her son 'Papa Bear'. She attended the Wireless Festival in the UK, performed at the Young Money Reunion in Toronto and saw her latest single 'Super Freaky Girl' debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, her first solo song to do so.


The Red Hot Chili Peppers were also named Global Icons and won Best Rock for 'Black Summer.'
