SOLANGE MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO COMPOSE FOR THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET

August 16, 2022

Solange Knowles is stretching her artistic wings and has now added composer to her list of extraordinary talents. She announced on Instagram that she has composed a score for Gianna Reisen's choreographed performance 'New Reisen' which will also feature costumes by Alejandro Gómez Palomo for Palomo Spain. Solange also makes history as the first black woman to compose an original score for the New York City Ballet.

The Grammy winner has been a longstanding contributor to the arts, her creativity woven throughout her work. In 2018 she directed and scored a film titled Metatronia (Metatron's Cube) performed at Hammer's Museum. The performance was also choregraphed by Gerard & Kelly and even featured one of the singer's own sculptures. Her music has continuously been guided by her soulful flow of artistry including her single Almeda.

She is also the creator and creative director of Saint Heron, a community library cataloguing the artistic contributions of black creatives throughout history including poetry, fashion, music and design.

The City Ballet Orchestra has been slated to perform the score along with a featured, and yet unknown, soloist. The show will premiere at the Fall Fashion Gala at the New York City Ballet on September 28, 2022, followed with dates in October and May at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are available for purchase.
