Vanessa Bryant has won her lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff and Fire departments, after she sought damages for their conduct during the death of her husband, Kobe Bryant, and daughter, Gianna Bryant. The jury delivered their verdict on August 23, 2022 in favour of the widow with a total judgement of $31 million, $16 million of which will go to Mrs. Bryant. The remaining $15 million was awarded to plaintiff Christopher Chester. Chester's wife (Sarah) and daughter (Payton) also died in the crash.
On January 26, 2020 retired NBA icon Kobe, Gianna, and other victims died instantly in a devastating helicopter crash in Los Angeles. They were on their way to a basketball tournament in Los Angeles. Kobe was a frequent flyer, travelling to attend games and visit his family in California. Deputies and firefighters of the Los Angeles County that attended the crash took grisly pictures of the scene and later shared them with colleagues against the knowledge and permission of the victims' families.

Bryant's widow subsequently filed an invasion of privacy lawsuit against the County seeking damages for the horrendous acts during the tragic incident. The County filed a request to throw the case out of court but it was denied.
Kobe's birthday was just two days earlier (August 23, 2022), with tributes pouring in all over social media. He would have turned 44 years old.
