In Canada there has been a striking increase in pets being surrendered as pet owners no longer have the time or the money to provide the necessary care.
Surrenders have increased 75% since last year.
Many pets were acquired during COVID's lockdown as a source of companship. With many companies now requiring employees return to work, pets being returned in droves. Inflation has also increased the cost of pet food, health and accessories.
Shelters are urging owners to find new homes with friends or relatives before surrendering the pet.
