On September 13, 2022, 22-year old Mahsa Amini was arrested by Iran police for not hearing her Hijab correctly, a religious head covering required to be worn under Islamic law. After being detained she was later found dead in her cell under suspicious circumstances. A post-mortem examination revealed bruises on her body suggesting that she had been beaten.
Her death has sparked global outrage with millions of people protesting her death. Women are also removing their hijabs or cutting their hair in defiance of the regime. Actress and activist Angelina Jolie has also called for more freedom for women in Iran.
