Most known for his role as Det. John Munch in the 'Law and Order' tv franchise, comic and actor Richard Belzer died on the morning of February 19, 2023, confirmed by friend Bill Scheft's in his statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He passed away at his home in France as a result of numerous health issues. According to Scheft the actor's last words were ‘Fuck you, motherfucker'.
In an interview with People, Belzer described a tough childhood with comedy becoming both an outlet and escape. After trying his hand at journalism he started his career as a comic appearing on radio and in shows including 'The Groove Tube', 'Saturday Night Live', and 'National Lampoon Radio Hour'.
His breakout role came in NBC's 'Homicide: Life on the Street' series making his first appearance in 1993 as the quick witted conspiracy theorist detective with the shades (he confirmed that he wore sunglasses due to a sensitivity to light). After the show's cancellation, he reprised his role in 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' in 2016 and other spinoffs thereafter.
