Will Smith has broken his silence and posted an official video apologizing to Chris Rock for slapping him at that Oscars in March 2022. In this video Will is seen walking into a room and sitting down to face the camera. He goes through a series of questions that he answers throughout the video.
The first question was why didn't Will apologize during his acceptance speech for winning the best award for the film 'King Richard'. Will admitted that he was "fogged out" and "fuzzy" at that moment but did reach "out to Chris and the message that came back is that he's not ready to talk. And when he is, he will reach out." He then went on to publicly apologize to Chris:
"So I will say to you Chris I apologize to you, my behaviour was unacceptable and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk. I want to apologize to Chris' mother...I saw an interview that Chris' mother did and you know that was one of the things at that moment...I want to apologize to Chris' family, specifically Tony Rock, we had a great relationship...and this is probably irreparable."
Smith said he spent the last three months reflecting and trying to understand his actions and reiterated that "There's no part of me that thinks that's the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insults."
When asked if he was prompted to slap Chris when Jada rolled her eyes at the joke, Will set the record straight that he "did not do it because Jada rolled her eyes" and that his actions were brought on by his own personal experiences. He then proceeded to apologize to his kids and family "for the heat that I brought on."
While Chris Rock was hosting the 2022 Academy Awards, he made a joke towards Jada Pinkett-Smith about her playing a role in G.I. Jane 2 due to her having a bald head. Jada has been battling Alopecia ( condition causing you to lose your hair) which she has talked about on her show Red Table Talk. Will Smith approached the stage and slapped Chris. He returned to his seat shouting "Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
His last post since the video was on March 28, 2022 when which released a statement apologizing and abhorring all forms of violence.
